I have been looking at satnavs recently and so many of them have as one of the features a “safety camera” database.
Why do the manufacturers insist on calling these hideous devices “safety cameras”? They are not safety cameras – they are speed cameras.
If you drive over the alcohol limit, you are not driving safely but as long as you don’t break the speed limit the cameras will not flash you – even if you are swerving all over the road.
If you drive while high on drugs, you are not driving safely but as long as you don’t break the speed limit the cameras will not flash you – again even if you are swerving all over the road.
If you drive without tax or insurance or an MOT, you are not driving safely but as long as you don’t break the speed limit the cameras will not flash you.
They are speed cameras – they are there to catch you speeding and thus raise revenue. Any safety measures are purely incidental not intentional.

A good point.
But, it is also interesting to note that people used to tell the police "have you not got real offenders to chase." Now that there are fewer officers and we have cameras and civilians behind cameras doing the traffic cop job we moan about the lack of human discretion and sloppy strict liability justice of it all.

Is this justice (albeit rough) in the long run though? I wonder what you think about it. I'm not sure myself...even as the victim of blind injustice for the speeding offence that I am likely to be prosecuted/fined for this month.
